Pilot Country Details

Colombia is a country in South America, with an HDI ranking of 98 out of 187 countries. The main obstacle to human development in the country is an asymmetric armed conflict that has been occurring since 1960. The conflict has impacted the majority of Colombians, resulting in the marginalization of populations in many regions and the diversion of a large percentage of Colombia’s GDP to fund security instead of areas such as education or health. The conflict has also harmed biodiversity and weakened democracy. Nonetheless, since 2012 the country has been working towards lasting peace with support from the UN, and there has been significant progress. En route to achieving the MDGs by 2015, Colombia has recorded overall positive results. However, progress has been uneven, and the country still faces considerable challenges in terms of achieving more equitable and inclusive development.

Partnering for a Peaceful Future in Colombia

12-12-2016

Colombia faces a critical moment in history; after the negative results of the public consultation through a referendum, the Congress approved an updated peace agreement that will allow the country to enter a stage of post-conflict. This phase requires the long-term commitment, knowledge, experience and articulation of philanthropic actors. AFE and its 70 member foundations are willing to assume this challenge.

The Association of Family and Corporate Foundations -AFE Colombia- that gathers the 67 most important family and corporate foundations in the country adds itself to the voices that diverse sectors of civil society and the private sector in the country have expressed to reach a national agreement for peace promptly.

Need for educational progress as critical as ever in Colombia

8-10-2016

In Colombia, quality education is a critical issue to ensure lasting peace. All those involved in Colombian development must ensure that all, from early childhood to youth, receive a quality education without prejudice of their social and economic background, race, gender, or religion. Education is not solely a task for the government and local authorities; philanthropy can contribute to improving the quality of education through social pilot projects, implementing innovations, and new models.

SDG Philanthropy Platform in Colombia collaborates with CEPEI and UNSDSN to do a comprehensive study on the country’s data ecosystem for the SDGs

On October 14, 2015, the SDG Philanthropy Platform, UNDP, UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network,  and CEPEI held an inaugural work session for a new collaborative study on Mapping the Data Ecosystem in Colombia. The idea for this initiative was born at the Cartagena Data Festival organized earlier this year by UNDP, CEPEI, ODI, Africa Gathering, Paris 21, Data-Pop Alliance, and UNFPA in Colombia. The main objective of the event was to contribute to global efforts on strengthening the use of data for the implementation of the SDGs. Colombia, a champion for SDG data at the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, is among eight pilot countries to undertake this study. The initiative aims to evaluate existing data availability to measure the SDGs and assess the capacity and institutional upgrading required to track the new agenda in Colombia. In keeping with the spirit of the multi-year process of consultations on the Post-2015 Agenda over the last three years, the initiative will follow the principles of inclusion and accountability to facilitate meaningful engagement of all stakeholders, and in particular those usually underrepresented or marginalized in data-related policy discussions and processes. For more information, please read the press release and the report from the event, or contact Natalia Currea at natalia.currea@undp.org.
