Press Release - SDG Philanthropy Platform Launches in Brazil

5-4-2017

5th April 2017 - The SDG Philanthropy Platform launched in Brazil at a high-level online conference, aiming to deepen partnerships to achieve the SDGs. Brazil becomes the eighth pilot country to launch the Platform, joining Kenya, Ghana, Zambia, Indonesia, Colombia, the United States, and India.

The high-level meeting was attended by a wide range of important players from the Brazilian philanthropic sector, such as private social investors, GIFE (Group of Institutes, Foundations and Enterprises), IDIS (Institute for the Development of Social Investment) and WINGS (Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support).

Speaking at the launch of the Platform in Brazil, Maristela Baioni, Assistant Resident Representative for Programme of UNDP, said “UNDP Brazil recognizes the leadership played by Philanthropic Foundations and Institutes in various segments of society, by developing actions that have a transforming role in the country. We are confident that the work done here, aligned with the 2030 Agenda, will become a reference regarding private social investment contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals achievement.”

The Platform aims to reduce duplication of efforts around the SDGs and to leverage resources among partners, which includes philanthropic organizations and foundations, the United Nations and other development partners, governments, civil society and businesses (including social enterprises). It intends to give grantees and donors a greater voice in the national plan for SDG implementation.

The Platform enables stronger partnerships between philanthropic organizations, the United Nations and other development partners, governments, civil society, businesses, and social enterprises in achieving the SDGs.

The organizations involved at the launch of the Platform in Brazil have now begun a cycle of five meetings that will result in the mapping of the Brazilian philanthropic ecosystem, and in the definition of priority themes, regions and SDGs for addressing private social investments.

The SDG Philanthropy Platform is a global initiative that connects philanthropy with knowledge and networks that can deepen collaboration, leverage resources and sustain impact, driving SDG delivery within national development planning. We are a global facilitator that help partners optimize their resources by enabling effective collaboration with the broader development ecosystem in countries. The Platform is a collaboration between philanthropy and the greater international development community, led by UNDP, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors and Foundation Center, and supported by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Ford Foundation, The MasterCard Foundation, Brach Family Charitable Foundation, and UN Foundation.
